ZX8301

Chip on the Sinclair QL computer, responsible for graphics

The ZX8301 is an Uncommitted Logic Array (ULA) integrated circuit designed for the Sinclair QL microcomputer. Also known as the "Master Chip", it provides a Video Display Generator, the division of a 15 MHz crystal to provide the 7.5 MHz system clock, ZX8302 register address decoder, DRAM refresh and bus controller. The ZX8301 is IC22 on the QL motherboard.

The Sinclair Research business model had always been to work toward a maximum performance to price ratio (as was evidenced by the keyboard mechanisms in the QL and earlier Sinclair models). Unfortunately, this focus on price and performance often resulted in cost cutting in the design and build of Sinclair's machines. One such cost driven decision (failing to use a hardware buffer integrated circuit (IC) between the IC pins and the external RGB monitor connection) caused the ZX8301 to quickly develop a reputation for being fragile and easy to damage, particularly if the monitor plug was inserted or removed while the QL was powered up. Such action resulted in damage to the video circuitry and almost always required replacement of the ZX8301.

The ZX8301, when subsequently used in the International Computers Limited (ICL) One Per Desk featured hardware buffering, and the chip proved to be much more reliable in this configuration.

Sinclair QL

The Sinclair QL is a personal computer launched by Sinclair Research in 1984, as an upper-end counterpart to the ZX Spectrum. The QL was the last desktop microcomputer from Sinclair Research aimed at the serious home user and professional and executive users markets from small to medium-sized businesses and higher educational establishments, but failed to achieve commercial success.

One Per Desk

The One Per Desk, or OPD, was a British innovative hybrid personal computer and telecommunications terminal based on the hardware of the Sinclair QL. The One Per Desk was built by International Computers Limited and launched in the United Kingdom in 1984. It was designed to run business-related software packages, not as a general-purpose computer.

The following is a list of clones of Sinclair Research's Sinclair QL microcomputer: Sandy QLT / Futura CST Thor series (Thor 1 / Thor 20 / Thor XVI) Qubbesoft Aurora (a replacement QL motherboard) Peter Graf's Qx0 series of motherboards: Q40, Q40i and Q60 Peter Graf's Q68 (a stand-alone FPGA-based SMSQ/E-machine) and QIMSI Gold (an FPGA-based expansion for the original QL's ROM port that basically is a Q68) The ZX Spectrum Next FPGA-based computer The following hardware devices provided QL compatibility for other computer platforms: Futura Datasenter QL Emulator for the Atari ST Jochen Merz's QVME card for the Atari MEGA STE and Atari TT Miracle Systems QXL and QXL II cards for PC compatibles The ICL One Per Desk (also sold as the BT Merlin Tonto or the Telecom Australia Computerphone) shared some hardware components with the QL but was not intended to be software-compatible.
