About Fathomly
An independent reference site for people who want to understand how the world got this way.
What we do
Fathomly publishes clear, readable articles on history, civilizations, science, nature, geography, culture, technology and the ideas behind them. Everything is free to read and no account is needed.
Where the articles come from
Fathomly Guides
Guides are original long-form explainers written for Fathomly. Each one covers a topic from the ground up and ends with key terms and takeaways. Many include a video from an established educational creator, credited under the player.
Encyclopedia entries
To cover hundreds of thousands of topics, Fathomly adapts articles from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia written by volunteers. Wikipedia's text is published under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike license, which allows it to be reused and adapted as long as the original authors are credited and the adaptation is shared under the same terms. Every encyclopedia entry on Fathomly links to its source article, its list of authors and the license, and credits each image. Fathomly is not affiliated with the Wikimedia Foundation.
Our standards
- Clarity first: plain language, defined terms and a logical order.
- Credit everyone: authors, image creators and video creators are always named.
- Correct mistakes openly: reported errors are reviewed and fixed.
- No ads and no tracking: see the privacy policy.
