Wireless radio triggering system for off-camera lighting

The PocketWizard is a wireless radio triggering system for off-camera lighting developed in the late 1990s, by LPA Design, an American company based in South Burlington, Vermont.

It requires a transmitter electrically connected to the camera, usually mounted on the camera's hot shoe, to trigger a remote receiver connected to a remote flash unit via a PC Cord.

Guide number

When setting photoflash exposures, the guide number of photoflash devices (flashbulbs and electronic devices known as "studio strobes", "on-camera flashes", "electronic flashes", "flashes", "speedlights", and "speedlites") is a measure photographers can use to calculate either the required f-stop for any given flash-to-subject distance, or the required distance for any given f-stop. To solve for either of these two variables, one merely divides a device's guide number by the other.

Flash synchronization

In photography, flash synchronization or flash sync is the synchronizing the firing of a photographic flash with the opening of the shutter admitting light to photographic film or electronic image sensor. In cameras with mechanical shutters synchronization is supported by an electrical contact within the shutter mechanism, which closes the circuit at the appropriate moment in the shutter opening process.

Ring flash

A ring flash is a photographic flash that surrounds a camera lens with a circular source of light. Unlike conventional flashes which provide a point light source, a ring flash is intended to illuminate a subject with minimal shadows by closely and evenly surrounding the optical axis of the camera lens.
