Magazine House Ltd. (株式会社マガジンハウス, Kabushikigaisha Magajinhausu) is a Japanese publisher, formerly named Heibon Shuppan Co., Ltd.
01History
The company was founded in October 1945 by Kinosuke Iwahori and Tatsuo Shimizu. Its first publications were the magazines Heibon and Heibon Weekly. In 1964, it launched the influential men's magazine Heibon Punch.
During the early 1970s, the magazine became a major platform for gravure idol photography. Its most famous publication was the "Apple Nude" (林檎ヌード), a photograph of model Nami Asada taken by photographer Yoichi Aoyagi on 24 December 1972. Published in the 12 March 1973 issue, the image sold over one million copies, was immediately reprinted, and became one of the most iconic photographs in Japanese publishing history. Asada's photographs appeared exclusively in Heibon Punch for the duration of her active career (1973-1978), during which Aoyagi produced over 10,000 negatives; the collaboration has been described as one of the most significant photographer-model partnerships in Japanese publishing.
