Guildford Phoenix

The Guildford Phoenix are an ice hockey team based in Guildford, Surrey, competing in the NIHL 2 South (Wilkinson) Division , part of the British National Ice Hockey League structure. Founded in 2017, the team plays its home games at the Guildford Spectrum, a multi‑sport arena that also hosts the Elite Ice Hockey League’s Guildford Flames. The Phoenix were created to strengthen Guildford’s senior hockey provision and to provide a clear progression pathway for locally trained players moving from junior competition into senior levels of the British game.

The team operates as the senior men’s side of the Guildford Junior Ice Hockey Club (GJIHC) and forms a central component of the organisation’s development model. Many players advance from the Phoenix to NIHL 1 or the National League, reflecting the club’s emphasis on coaching continuity and competitive senior experience. The Phoenix also serve as a minor league affiliate of the Guildford Flames, supporting player development and movement between the two organisations.

History

Guildford Phoenix were established in 2017 by the Guildford Junior Ice Hockey Club to provide a senior development team within the local hockey structure. Prior to their formation, junior players graduating from GJIHC programmes often had to leave Guildford to continue their development elsewhere at senior level. The creation of the Phoenix enabled players to progress through junior age groups and into senior competition without relocating.

Early seasons (2017-2019)

The Phoenix entered competition during a period of structural change in British ice hockey. Following the collapse of the English Premier League (EPL), the NIHL South 1 and South 2 divisions operated as a combined league for the first two seasons of the club’s existence. Competing against a mixed field of former EPL sides, established NIHL 1 teams, and development squads, the Phoenix finished 6th in their inaugural season and 5th the following year, strong results for a newly formed development team.

Rise to prominence (2019-2024)

The club gained significant media attention in October 2019 when former Chelsea and Arsenal goalkeeper Petr Čech signed as a netminder, drawing national and international coverage. On the ice, the Phoenix developed a reputation for consistent performance and strong player development. From 2019-20 onward, the team became one of the most successful sides in NIHL 2, winning the league title in five of the next six seasons. Their only non‑championship year came in 2022-23, when they narrowly finished behind Bristol, a result influenced by a technicality in the league standings.

Championship success (2025-26)

The 2025-26 season marked a major milestone in the club’s history. Phoenix won the NIHL 2 South playoffs, held at the Steel City Showdown in Sheffield, defeating the Peterborough Phantoms NIHL 2 . They then went on to win the NIHL 2 National Playoffs defeating Sutton Sting, emerging as National Playoff Champions for the combined North 2 and South 2 divisions, the organisation’s first national‑level title.

Affiliation with Guildford Flames

Guildford Phoenix act as a minor league affiliate of the Guildford Flames, who compete in the Elite Ice Hockey League. The affiliation supports player movement between the two clubs, provides additional development opportunities for prospects, and strengthens Guildford’s overall hockey infrastructure. Shared facilities at the Guildford Spectrum further reinforce the connection between the organisations.

Development Pathway
