The term four piper, also known as a four stacker, is United States Navy terminology for classes of destroyers with four funnels. These include the classes listed below:

These classes were built for use by the United States Navy during World War I and subsequently "moth-balled". Fifty were loaned, under the Destroyers-for-bases deal, to the United Kingdom when convoy escorts were desperately needed in the early years of World War II.

A four-funnel liner, also known as a four-stacker, is an ocean liner with four funnels. At the turn of the 20th century, as national shipping companies competed for passengers on the lucrative transatlantic route between Europe and America, a series of increasingly large, luxurious and fast ocean liners were built requiring four funnels to service their expansive boiler rooms.

The first automotive torpedo was developed in 1866, and the torpedo boat was developed soon after. In 1898, while the Spanish-American War was being fought in the Caribbean and the Pacific, Assistant Secretary of the Navy Theodore Roosevelt wrote that the Spanish torpedo boat destroyers were the only threat to the American Navy, and pushed for the acquisition of similar vessels.
