Conformity Gate

The television series Stranger Things, created by the Duffer Brothers for Netflix, released its fifth and final season throughout November and December 2025, culminating with "Chapter Eight: The Rightside Up", the finale, on December 31. Eleven, the show's protagonist, seemingly dies with the destruction of the in-universe Upside Down, but Mike Wheeler, her partner, theorizes that she may still be alive and in hiding, leaving her fate ambiguous. Various publications reported that the final episode, signally her narrative treatment, had a divisive reception among audiences.

After the release of the season's second volume on December 25, concerns over the integrity of and possible narrative gaps in the episodes, known as "Cutgate", led fans to theorize that hours of content had been cut; one of them then created a public document on Google Docs listing the alleged gaps and missing story beats in those episodes. A Change.org petition calling for the release of "unseen footage" was created by Wennii J., a fan based in New York, and raised over 400,000 signatures. Actor Randy Havens, who portrays Mr. Clarke in the show, was the first to debunk this, saying on December 28, "There's no secret Snyder Cut of the show. Please don't believe everything some random ass tells you on the Internet."

Conformity Gate was seen to be an extension of that theory. It was formed in an audio livestream on X hosted by Jess, a fan credited with coining the term under the handle 67gate, deriving from the suffix -gate. TikTok user amphibiaaccount was one of the first to present the idea of a secret or extended finale, and over 13,200 posts about the theory were released on the site. The "Conformity" in the name came from characters in the show conforming to societal standards, despite the show's usual subversion. After the release of the finale, the theory cut into the mainstream via social media, specifically X, TikTok, and Reddit. The belief that the finale's events were an illusion created by the antagonist Vecna spread rapidly there, and the date and time of 8 p.m. Eastern Time (ET), January 7, 2026 was soon determined for the release of a secret and "real" final episode.

Shutdown

In a November 2025 interview, when asked if multiple endings had been filmed, Matt Duffer denied that notion: "We didn’t... I mean [...] I love when I hear people do that, but I'm like, 'How do you have the time?' [...] How do they have the energy to write it and then shoot it?" Ultimately, the theorized episode did not materialize.

The surge of curious Netflix users on January 7 were attributed to a technical outage from the streaming service that day. Slightly before 8 p.m. ET, over 1,200 reports were submitted to the website tracker Downdetector. Netflix and the Duffers did not directly address the theory, though the service updated the biography line of its Stranger Things social media accounts to state, in all caps, that "All episodes of Stranger Things are now playing". On the same day on Threads, Havens wrote, "Yes it's the actual finale I'm sorry to all the conspiracy theorists".

Linnea Berthelsen, who plays Kali Prasad, said in an interview that she only saw the theory in passing due to not being online often, adding, "There's a really lovely documentary coming out [...] Which I think is going to be the real deal." She further clarified that any undisclosed plans would only be known by the Duffers and Millie Bobby Brown, who portrays Eleven. Some proponents moved the predicted date to January 12, 2026, the day the behind-the-scenes, One Last Adventure: The Making of Stranger Things 5, would be released, but the rumored episode did not appear then either.

The date January 7, 2026 was chosen as the alleged release date of a ninth episode, as on December 25, 2025, Netflix released a teaser clip of what would turn out to be the presentation of its 2026 slate with the caption "Your Future is on its way. #WhatNext Jan 7, 2026". That date also marked the observance of Orthodox Christmas, following the fifth season's tendency to drop episodes on major holidays. A video post on Stranger Things's official TikTok page features Havens standing in front of a clock set to 1:07 p.m. The number seven is significant from character Will Byers's roll of a die landing on the same number in the show's first episode to foreshadow capture by a Demogorgon, which is mirrored in the finale's credits section. 8 p.m. ET was expected due to it being the same release time as the fifth season's three segments.

Photoshopped and AI-generated images of Netflix subtly promoting the theory circulated on TikTok. Following the release of the trailer to the One Last Adventure documentary, theorists pointed to alleged clues from the production's environment, including the scripts being white instead of red, and whiteboard notes discussing the potential inclusion of Demogorgons in the final battle, which were eventually scrapped. Some former proponents of Conformity Gate, disillusioned by the later release of One Last Adventure, alleged the use of ChatGPT in the season's writing process, as well as other grievances. They have highlighted a blurry shot of the documentary as indication.

On behalf of Parade, Liz Declan wrote, "While the documentary [...] led to a new wave of negative responses and criticism, it also likely means the end of this long-running string of theories, which began with Cutgate and (presumably) has ended with Conformity Gate. Perhaps now [...] discourse on the Stranger Things finale will die down."

Diegetic evidence

Proponents pointed to numerous continuity errors, background elements, and perceived glitches across the episodes, including a series of cassette tapes apparently spelling "U did not stop me" in Morse code, and Dungeons & Dragons books reading "X A LIE" vertically, which was debunked as a behind-the-scenes image rather than taken from the finale itself. Exit signs were spotted as well, drawing parallels to The Truman Show's visual storytelling of artifice. Will mentions drinking milkshakes at Melvald's, an in-universe town store that was a diner when Vecna was a child. Robin Buckley's girlfriend, Vickie, is absent from the epilogue, possibly because Vecna did not have the knowledge of her to place her in an illusion. However, it is likely that they simply broke up.

In the epilogue, Robin says that Hawkins, Indiana, the fictional town where the series is set, "feels different". Vecna has the ability to trap people in psychic dream worlds; as a result, the theory maintains that the ending was too idyllic and emotionally safe to be real. The characters allegedly fit neatly into societal standards. As HOLA! USA says, their "almost too tidy" lives were not "breaking rules and smashing expectations". Certain fans suggested that Vecna conjured this illusion immediately after a climactic altercation with Will in the season's fourth episode, "Chapter Four: Sorcerer". Instead of Will siphoning Vecna's hive mind, the latter purportedly started to control the former as a "traitor-spy" that was once teased by the franchise's marketing.

The robes for the main cast's graduation are orange, symbolically the color of prison jumpsuits, while they are meant to be green and yellow. At the ceremony, several extras ostensibly resemble Vecna's style and mannerisms, one raising a blank yellow sign. Another wears a shirt reading "Duffers" in reference to the Duffer Brothers, alleging that they are watching the audience.

Numerous cast and crew members of Stranger Things shared their opinions on Conformity Gate since the finale's release. In one such instance, Matthew Modine, who portrayed the antagonistic Martin Brenner, expressed his dislike for the episode on Instagram, and replied "Hoping so for the fans" to a comment about the theory.

Promotion for starring roles

The theory was referenced in the January 17, 2026 episode of Saturday Night Live, which was hosted by Finn Wolfhard and featured his fellow series co-stars Caleb McLaughlin and Gaten Matarazzo; all three also respectively reprised their roles as Mike Wheeler, Lucas Sinclair, and Dustin Henderson. In a skit, after the trio traveled to Iceland, Mike professes that "everything [they] thought happened" was an illusion planted by Vecna, who is still alive. Upon questioning from Lucas and Dustin, he says, "You want one reason? How about Eleven," leading to Kenan Thompson appearing as her.

When asked about it in a later interview with The Hollywood Reporter while promoting his starring role in Goat (2026), McLaughlin said, "I think people missed the concept of what the show is when they were like, 'Oh, there’s going to be more'", explaining the show's themes of imagination and storytelling. When the outlet interviewed Matarazzo for starring in Pizza Movie (2026), he recalled walking in New York City when a fan stopped him to ask 'Is it coming out tonight?', and revealed that she had cancelled a romantic date over the alleged ninth episode. The actor reflected, "I pleaded with her: 'Please just call him back. Don’t miss out on your date for this.' There was secondhand disappointment on my end because I felt bad having to say that nothing was coming."

Charlie Heaton (Jonathan Byers) called the theory "kind of insane" after surmising that "it was just real honestly" on his last day of filming. On an AP News clip for his next starring role in Cold Storage (2026), Joe Keery (Steve Harrington) joked, "It'll be interesting to see when it finally comes out... 'Don't quote me on that!'", before agreeing with his co-stars that it was understandable; many fans were emotionally attached to and grew up with Stranger Things, and so they would "want more". He and Heaton have also talked about the theory personally.

Further events

In May, during an Emmys For Your Consideration event in Los Angeles, series executive producer Shawn Levy joined a few of the show's cast members to discuss the finale. He praised the ending and shared his opinion, "That was baffling and thank God by that point I had learned not to even try engaging with people online," remarking that he "felt bad for the world, because they really believed; as much as I believe that Eleven is still alive somewhere by those waterfalls." Noah Schnapp (Will Byers) disclosed that fans would send him spam texts to ask if a secret finale would air. Jamie Campbell Bower (Vecna) said "that was fucking crazy" in reference to fan response of a video on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon. "They were like, 'He’s saying something about time and he’s stopping on nine!'", he elaborated, "and I was like, 'No, no, no, we've just come up with this idea in the back of a car to the airport!'" Nevertheless, Schnapp and Bower both expressed belief that Eleven was still alive.

During an event on the sidelines of the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con in July, Bower was interviewed about Conformity Gate by Entertainment Weekly; he called out confirmation bias, saying, "Anything that we did was like, 'Well, that just proves it,'" and revealed that fans would still continue to ask him about the theory. "I'm like, 'It's been six months!' If there is, they're kind of behind," he concluded.

Conformity Gate went viral, and is described by multiple commentaries as a conspiracy theory. Having garnered psychological attention, it is also seen as a way of mourning the show's conclusion, and fan fiction has been suggested as a better way to channel such passion. The theory has also been described as part of a broader criticism for the writing and narrative direction of the fifth season. An event on the cryptocurrency-based prediction market Polymarket was set up for the theory, raising over US$15 million by January 7. Overall, it has raised over $30 million.

Eleven's fate was one of the more controversial aspects of the finale, and some fans opined that the ending was "so bad" it could not be real. AI-generated images of the character pairing known as "Mileven" (Mike Wheeler and Eleven) reuniting in Iceland gained traction on TikTok. Some fans of Mileven and "Byler" (Will Byers and Mike Wheeler) were unhappy with the final outcome of those relationships, leading them to turn to Conformity Gate for hope. The Stranger Things fandom appropriated the "-gate" suffix, originally regarding the Watergate scandal, to refer to such "shipping" and alternate universes.

Erica Russell from Teen Vogue said that Conformity Gate is either a "shared psychosis" or a marketing psy-op. She said it would be "meta", remarking on the existence of "perhaps even a broader vol. 3". Kendall Myers, writing for Collider, drew comparisons to The Johnlock Conspiracy, a similar theory in which fans of the BBC series Sherlock believed that an additional episode of its fourth series would be released, and described it as "a testament to the dedication" of both fandoms.

Netflix Updates, a Facebook account with 983,000 followers, shared a poster with the words "Episode of Stranger Things will release on January 7". The post has been shared over 5,700 times and has received more than 10,000 comments, many of which were humorous perspectives offered by nonbelievers of the theory. One commenter wrote, "Vecna's wife wakes up and finds him in the shower and realises it was all a dream", referencing Bobby Ewing from the CBS 1980s soap opera Dallas, who shared a similar outcome to the comment's description.

Social science

Dr. Ricky Green, a research associate on conspiracy theories from the University of Kent's School of Psychology, made a statement on the university's official website through an editorial written by Emily Seling. It contends that human pattern-seeking skills may be a cause. According to it, as Stranger Things has the hallmarks of a mystery series capable of narrative misdirection, design choices may be interpreted as signals. Fans may have also perceived the finale as an "existential threat" to a sentimental story, and have pointed to the existence of real-world conspiracies coming true, consequently spawning social media misinformation.

Sophie Clarke, a reporter for The Irish News, views Conformity Gate as having created a sense of conformity of its own. She alleged that the lack of official response from Netflix "rather than cooling speculation, only seemed to legitimise it", and that social media had accelerated it. Based on how people would carry a herd mentality, she likened it to the reality game show franchise The Traitors.
