American technology training company
Codesmith is an American technology training company based in Los Angeles. Founded in 2015, it operated as a coding bootcamp teaching software engineering, and from 2025 introduced training programs focused on artificial intelligence.
01History
Codesmith was founded in Los Angeles in 2015 by Will Sentance and Alex Zai. It was initially based in the Playa Vista neighborhood. In October 2016 the company raised $1.1 million in a funding round led by Chad Troutwine, chief executive of test-preparation company Veritas Prep.
By 2016 Codesmith ran on-site programs in New York City and Los Angeles alongside remote offerings. In 2024 the company closed its in-person programs and moved to remote-only delivery, citing market conditions.
In 2025, amid a contraction in the coding bootcamp sector attributed to the adoption of AI coding tools, Codesmith introduced an AI technical leadership program aimed at mid-career software engineers.
02Programs
Codesmith's teaching approach draws on the Socratic method and uses practice-based techniques including pair programming. Its curriculum has covered JavaScript, computer science fundamentals, and mobile development. The company has offered part-time and full-time immersive programs, and provides free public workshops and lectures.
Since 2024, Codesmith has delivered Future Code, a funded 42-week technology training program for New York City residents, administered with the New York City Tech Talent Pipeline and the New York City Department of Small Business Services.
